HISTORY OF ROULETTE - THE ORIGIN OF THE ROULETTE WHEEL

As far as games of chance go, you will not find a more popular and more spectacular game than roulette. As soon as the first online casinos came to the Internet they knew that roulette would have to be central to their online catalogue. The origin of the roulette game is attributed to the French Mathematician Blaise Pascal. As is goes Pascal actually invented this enormously popular game completely accidentally. Concerned with the far more pressing scientific concerns of producing a perpetual motion machine, in 1655 the course of his experiments led him to develop the roulette wheel. The wheel as a game of chance goes back further to medieval Europe and the game called the wheel of fortune but this was only changed to its current incarnation in the early nineteenth century. France and Italy were particularly fond of the game where it was played only by aristocrats and royalty.

In 1841, François Blanc removed the double zero which had the effect of reducing the house edge, this variation became known as French roulette. American casinos kept this older version and so when people talk about American roulette they are referring to the double zero found on American roulette tables.

Myths surround this game of chance including the particularly haunting one that the earliest developers of the game sold their soul to the devil due to the fact that the numbers on a roulette where, 1-36, add up to the unholy 666 number, the mark of the devil.

Nowadays the game of roulette is played all over the world, with the roulette table remaining the centerpiece of contemporary casinos. The only difference today from region to region is if the roulette table in question features a double zero or not.

This brings us all the way to the Internet age, where perhaps surprisingly roulette remains as the king of games of chance, online casinos are thoroughly well stocked today with casino games from every region of the world including the most popular Video Poker, Baccarat and Blackjack but regardless of all this competition the roulette table remains as the most iconic and the most iconic game of chance played all over the planet and across the Internet today.
